Unveiling of Clare Stevenson Portrait

Kings Cross Community Centre was honoured to host the recent unveiling of a portrait of our founder, Clare Stevenson, after securing a print from the Australian War Memorial. Painted by Nora Heysen, the first female to win the Archibald Award in 1938, she was also the first woman to be appointed an official war artist, during the Second World War.

KXCC Board Chair Lisa Cotton welcomed guests before General Manager Tracylee Arestides reflected on Clare's remarkable life and the reasons we continue to celebrate her enduring legacy of service, leadership and community spirit.

The special occasion brought together Jess Miller, Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney; Laila Ellmoos, City of Sydney Historian; Kristen Hannah, Acting CEO of Carers NSW and Mrs Annette Bennett, a founding member of KXCC.

The portrait now proudly hangs in the KXCC office, serving as a daily reminder of Clare Stevenson's vision, compassion and lasting contribution to the Kings Cross community.
